Narcissus's Journal
Nymphs are all over me and they absolutely adore me. How could they not?
As I was walking through the woods, I called out to hear if anyone was there. A voice answered me and I told her to show herself.
Really beautiful this nymph was, but it does not matter. She is not good enough for me and anyway, she keeps repeating what I say. Very strange. I sent her away with a broken heart.
Careening away from the story, I would like to remind myself just how beautiful I am. I have such beautiful bright eyes, locks of wonderful curly hair, perfect rounded cheeks, and an ivory neck that is just amazing.
Indubitably, I could not resist my beauty which is a constant distraction. However, getting back to my story, all the ladies were getting mad. I left a trail full of broken hearts and now I guess it will come back to haunt me.
Stealing away people's hearts is something I continued to do even though I had a feeling that one day, something was going to go wrong. I didn't care. Why should I?
So one of the girls who's heart I broke prayed to the gods. They listened to her and put a curse on me (although in some ways I think of it as a blessing.)
Upon receiving this curse, I went to a fountain to take a drink of water. As I looked into the water, I saw my gorgeous reflection. The times I think of this as a curse, is when I forget that I am looking at myself, and realize that this majestic person will ignore me. The times I think that this is a blessing, is when I realize this regal person in the reflection is me.
Staring at myself all day every day, with nothing to eat or drink at all, I perished. No one could find my body because in place of it was a flower. They named the flower a narcissus, after me. How sweet! It is the most beautiful flower in the whole world, I can tell you that as a fact.
Echo's Diary
Every time I spoke to someone, I just had to get in the last word. I always had so much to say! My big mouth got me into trouble, though. I was only trying to cover for my friend who was sneaking around with Zeus. Hera found out what was going on and put a curse on me for deceiving her. That's what I get for being a good friend!
"Come," Narcissus said to me. I had my response planned and ready, for I had my eye on this young man. But the only response I could muster was, "Come." Because of the curse, all I could do was repeat what was said to me! Our conversation was not off to a good start, and it did not end well either.
Heart-broken was I when Narcissus exclaimed, "Hands off! I would rather die than you should have me!" I was about to throw my arms around him and engulf him in a big bear hug. So much for that! After he finished insulting me, he fled from me. I was devastated and I escaped into the woods to hide my embarrassment.
Overtime, my bones turned to rocks, and the only thing that remained was my voice. If anyone ever shots something in an open space, I am ready to respond and repeat what he or she said. It is impossible to suppress my longing to have the last word.
